SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: AUGUST 1986

The three print runs for the 5th series Garbage Pail Kids are the same except for their wrappers. The first print run wrapper contains a 'red' color and a "25¢" logo with a -05- wrapper code. The second print run wrapper contains a 'maroon' color without a "25¢" logo and a -07- wrapper code.  The third print run wrapper also contains a 'maroon' color without the "25¢" logo and a -08- wrapper code.  The missing -06- wrapper code was a fifth print run of the 4th series Garbage Pail Kids manufactured in Canada along with the third 5th series print run. These additional print runs were caused by the growing popularity of the card craze during its peak production time, further prompted by the free exposure and advertising because of the ongoing court procedures between Topps and OAA during the course of the lawsuit.

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

1. The Last Series to have the character "ADAM Bomb" on the wrapper.

2. The first series to have an Off-Centered GPK Header and Name Bar. Cards 185a "FRAN Furter" and 185b "Hot DOUG".

3. The third of five series with 3 Print Runs.

4. The second series to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the super-hero suit of cards 172a "NAT Nerd" and 172b "CLARK Can't".

5. The first series with an Upside Down name bar. Cards 184a "Upside Down DONALD" and 184b "HUGH Turn".

6. This series has the Light Blue Name Bar ... but not the light pink name bar.

7. The second series to have a card showcasing Sticker Images From Previous Releases. Cards 189a "BRENDA Blender" and 189b "Juicy LUCY" contain a several character images from previous sets: The green 3rd series wrapper portraying the 1st series character 8a "ADAM Bomb" and 8b "Blasted BILLY"; A sticker of itself - cards 189a "Brenda Blender" and 189b "Juicy LUCY"; 3rd series image 115a "Warmin' NORMAN" and 115b "Well Done SHELDON"; And 3rd series cards 90a "Stoned SEAN" and 90b "Thick VIC" ... All images painted by Tom Bunk. The image concept comes from an unpublished Gross Bears Buttons piece, pictured below, in which the entire series was completed by Tom Bunk in 1985 (further information can be found in the Parody Pages of this site).

8. The series contains the first card Artwork "Signed" by an artist; both by artist John Pound ... The Topps company has never given any written credit for the GPK artists that contributed artwork to the sets -- only the 1991 Trash Can Trolls set depicted an over-all credit on the checklist card. Cards 182a "Tagged TAD" and 182b "Sprayed WADE" has 'J.P. 1986' spray-painted across the entire character after the artist John Pound (thanks Barry! -- I missed that one). Cards 192a "Delicate TESS" and 192b "Hamburger PATTIE" have 'MEAT 35 CENTS / POUND' written on the sign, the double meaning is the price of meat per 'pound', and for the artist John Pound who often autographs his name in cursive and then prints "POUND" afterwards. Both can be seen within the "Artwork Images" section above.

9. The first series to contain a product parody similar to the Topps Wacky Packages stickers ... Cards 200a "Fluoride FLOYD" and 200b "Dental DANIEL" have the character holding a tube of toothpaste called "Crust", much like the 1st series Wacky Package sticker "Crust".

10. Though the picture for cards 196a "Dangling DOLLY" and 196b "Surreal NEAL" has been cropped to card format, the tan object to the left can be seen as Another GPK Face in the final artwork. Please see the "Artwork Images" section above for details.

11. The first series to have Variation Backs that Are Puzzle Pieces.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1
. The 5th series "File Cards" character artwork on the back of the cards was completed by Tom Bunk.

1st series 5a "Dead TED" and 5b "JAY Decay"

2. Artist Tom Bunk had Different Renditions For several of his 5th series Color Roughs. Below are examples of these various color versions that you can compare to the actual final artwork for cards 167a "MICK Dagger" and 167b "Slayed SLADE", and 174a "FRED thread" and 174b "Repaired REX".

"Topps wanted the nasty guts to be replaced with nice cottonballs." - Tom Bunk

3. Poster #18 - "BUSTED!" from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th series Advertisement Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner (pictured above in the "Series Overview"). The image can also be found as card #14 "BUSTED!" in the Giant GPK 15 card sticker set with a curved GPK banner rather than the straight GPK banner. The GPK images found within the picture are listed within the "Fun Facts and Tidbits" section of the Giant Series page.

4. During the GPK card production process, a "Blue Lines" sheet is created and used within the correction process of the set ... below are several blue line proof card examples as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in 2006. Cards 176a "Condo MINNIE", 177a "Meltin' MILTON", 189a "BRENDA Blender", 198a "Gore MAY" (See the 6th Series "GPK History" section for an additional image).

5. Also during the GPK card production process, a black, Mask Film Transparency is used ... below are several film transparencies card examples as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in the Fall of 2006. The black mask for cards 188a "MEL Meal" and 188b "ROSS Roast" and cards 198a "Gore MAY" and 198b "CONNIE Sewer".

6. Uncut GPK Sheets were auctioned off of eBay, through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; The front image for the 5th series GPK set uncut sheet. (# 4-490-05-03-6)

7.
Some time in 1986, during the Garbage Pail Kids reign, Topps released the "Snotty Signs Stickers" that showcased different sized yellow and black 'signs' that could be stuck to objects. Card number 34 of 44 contained a small sticker that displays the message "GARBAGE PAIL KIDS LIVE", much like the popular catch-phrase "Frodo Lives" during the Lord of the Rings days.

8
. This John Pound Unpublished GPK was painted in 1986 and was intended for the 5th series, but remains unreleased. The GPK artwork was finally published in 2010 for the GPK Flashback set as LOST GPK cards 67a "Global WARREN" and 67b "AL Pocalypse".

9
. This John Pound Unpublished GPK was painted in 1986 and was intended for the 5th series, but the piece was removed late in the developemental stage of the set. This proof went up for sale on eBay through the Topps Vault during the month of April 2005. The piece was originally intended for the 3rd series set with only one bullet through the hat and the character holding a "PlayBill" which was changed to "SlayBill" for the 5th series card with Abe's hat now with two bullets and one bullet through the forehead. See the 3rd series "GPK History" section for additional and orginal images. Cards 199a "Ruptured RUPERT" and 199b "Gassy GUS" replaced cards 199a "Baby ABIE" and 199b in the set which both went through a layout change from a black number to a white number, a blue GPK header to a red GPK header, and a blue name bar to a yellow name bar. This particular GPK artwork was finally published in 2010 for the GPK Flashback set as LOST GPK cards 66a "Baby ABIE" and 66b "LINCOLN Park".
