SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: FEBRUARY 1987

Even though the 7th series Garbage Pail Kids has only two print runs, it contains one of the most interesting changes of any series. The first print run has both of cards 260b "Blasted BILLY II" and 261b "BOBBY Booger" with their original blue GPK headers, and card 289b "ALEXANDER The Grate" with a black, top centered, number. However, the second print run has cards 260b and 261b with a purple GPK header, and card 289b with a white, top corner, number. Although, the blue GPK header can be found in both print runs. By the 7th series release, Topps had settled its court case with OAA, promising that future GPK’s would look less like the CPdolls. It was also ruled that any finished artwork could still be released in future sets, hence, the 8th and 9th series.

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

1. The second series since the 1st series to have a Box And Wrapper that has a Garbage Pail Kid from within its own series (the rest of the series, 8th – 15th, will also be like this).

2. The first series to have a Number Positioned in the Top Center of the card. Card 289b "ALEXANDER The Grate" (first print run only).  And, the only series to change Number Position and Color in its first print run. 289b (black, top center) "ALEXANDER The Grate" to 289b (white, top corner).

3. The Wrapper was made in 1986 and the Cards have a 1987 trademark date (card production was post-poned because of the court case; packaging was created before set production).

4. The only series to change a GPK Header Color in its print runs. 260b "Blasted BILLY II" (blue header) to 260b (purple header), and 261b "BOBBY Booger" (blue header) to 261b (purple header).

5. The first series Without a Light Pink or Light Blue name bar.

6. The only series to have a Re-Occuring GPK Character - cards 8a "ADAM Bomb and 8b "Blasted BILLY" (1st series) and 260a "ADAM Boom and 8b "Blasted BILLY II". The "ADAM Bomb" character can also be found in cards 1a "JOEL Troll" and 1b "Fall-Out PAUL"of the Trash Can Trolls parody set (see the "Parody Pages" section wihin this website).

7. The first series to have Names Written In White that are not on a dark blue name bar - card example 252a "Milky WAYNE".

8. The third series to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the blue baseball cap of cards 257a "Cut-Up CARMEN" and 257b "Dotted LIONEL".

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1.
This Wrapper Mock-Up artwork was completed prior to the 7th series release and rendered by artist Tom Bunk. The GPK banner and sticker plater were changed to blue and arrow removed from character's head -- a straight GPK logo was considered -- eventually seen for the first time on the 9th series cartoon card backs. This could have been the first bi-colored wrapper instead of solid, not really used until the blue/green of the later Trash Can Trolls release. The All-New logo was considered for the later GPK series releases but only used for the non-25 cent 9th series wrappers; and eventually used for all of the All-New GPK releases in the 2000's.

2
. The Topps GPK Lawsuit with OAA (Original Appalachian Artworks) was settled at the same time that the 7th installment of GPK was released to the public. Though future series would not resemble the "Cabbage Patch Kids", it was ruled that any partially completed and fully completed material could still be released at a later date, hence the 8th and 9th series. The new look began during the 10th series.

3. Poster #18 - "BUSTED!" from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th series Advertisement Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner (pictured above in the "Series Overview"). The image can also be found as card #14 "BUSTED!" in the Giant GPK 15 card sticker set with a curved GPK banner rather than the straight GPK banner. The GPK images found within the picture are listed within the "Fun Facts and Tidbits" section of the Giant Series page.

4. This Tom Bunk Reworked GPK was finished in 1987 and was an idea sketch intended for the 7th series,
later redone and painted by John Pound to become 291a "HOMER Runt" and 291b "Screwball LEW".

5. The 7th series "File Cards" character rendered artwork on the back of the cards was completed By Tom Bunk.

1st series 1a "Nasty NICK" and 1b "Evil EDDIE"

6. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK series', which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going -- which artist was working on which concept piece, and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 7th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: "ghost", "staple gun" (7th - stapler), "butcher block", "kangaroo" (unpublished), "pilgrim in stocking", "iron maiden", "porcupine" (TCT; unpublished), "scalped" (9th), "cow kid branded" (unpublished), "Merlin", "toes as GPK heads" (TCT), "dog catcher", "tied to anchor - sharks" (TCT), "Mickey Mouse-type" (16th), "pumping self with bike pump" (8th), "bowling ball" (8th), "justice with scale", "aligator wrestler" (15th), "tar and feathered", "fondue", "atlas" (unpublished), "knit" (8th), "embryo", "wooden Indian on fire", "XMas ornaments".
