The "All-New"
Series 5 GPK were released in the spring of 2006 by Topps, Inc. and distributed
in April - one whole year after the successful "All-New" Series 4
with the popular artist sketch cards. The GPK series is comprised of all new
artwork by veteran GPK artists John Pound, Tom Bunk, James Warhola, and card-back
artwork by Jay Lynch (and Gary Whitney). This series also includes next-generation
GPK artists Luis Diaz, David Gross, Justin Green, John Cebollero; newcomers
Layron DeJarnette, Brent Engstrom, John Zeleznik; and concept artwork by Jeff
Zapata (art director), Mark Pingitore, Neil Camera and several artists listed
above. The naming panel for the gags were written by Jay Lynch for entire series.
For the first print run, each foil pack (with a suggested retail price of 99¢)
contains 6 sticker cards on 14 card stock (with a great gloss finish), and a
chance to come across an Alphabet sticker (inserted one in every 2 packs) or
a Magnet card (inserted one in every 6 packs). The set also contains 5 bonus
cards that can be found in special 'bonus boxes' or 'blister packs' that are
located at different retail chains. The Alphabet cards are mainly re-worked
artwork of characters from the ANS releases. The series once again starts back
at number one.

NON-SPORT UPDATE AD - GPK Card Review Article (Aug/Sept
2006; Vol. 17, #4)
1.
The Second U.S. GPK Set To Have an official Promo
Card, unlike the promo card inlay sheet of the ANS1 which
showcased three promo stickers on a peel away ad insert (1 of 3 "Juicy
JESS"; 2 of 3 "Disgustin' DUSTIN"; and 3 of 3
"Rad BRAD"), this is the second official GPK promo card which
was released at the San Diego Comic Convention in August of 2005, the first
being P1 "CHRISTINA Ugliera"
from the ANS3 set. The two bats unseen behind the GPK header are in front of
the header for the final 4a "MATT Mobile" and 4b "Batty
BRAD" card release; Luis Diaz's "LD Monster" character
remains in both cards (bottom left hand corner), but the for the final card
release, the "LD Monster" has been moved further to the left and placed
in the extreme corner.

2. Several promotional Advertisment characters (pictured above
in "Series Overview") had minor color and name Changes from
the original mock-up pieces to the final release cards: Advertisement piece
2a "MANNY Hands" with a pink name bar (pictured in the Flyer,
but is portrayed as "COLE Hands" for the Poster with a yellow
name bar) was changed to 2a "SAM Bidexterous" with a yellow
name bar; 5b "Batty BRAD" (pictured above) is the same for
the final release except the two bats behind the GPK header are now in front;
"RONNY Nose" with a yellow name bar was replaced with the name
5b "Runny RYAN" with a pink name bar; 6a "Matrix MAX"
with a red GPK header and a yellow name bar became "Matrix MIGUEL"
with a blue GPK header and a red name bar; character 11a "Slam DUNCAN"
with a red name bar was switched to 11a "Slam-Dunk DYLAN" with
a light blue name bar; and lastly, 14a "Regurgitate NATE" with
a yellow name bar became 14a "Regurgita-TED" with a blue name
bar for the final release.
3. The All-New Series with the Longest Name; Card 40a "Chopper-Chopped
CHRIS" (19 letters; 20 characters). The longest Original Series name
is from the 11th series; Card
428b "Garbage Mouth GILBERT" (19 letters; 19 characters).
4. As printed on the reverse-side of the All-New Series 5 promotional card
(pictured above in #1), the ANS5 series Chase Cards include all-new
Foil Initial Stickers (numbering 1-15) and Magnet cards, replacing the
Game cards and Tattoos chase cards, previously available for the All-New Series
4 set. Like many recycled ideas within Topps non-sport card sets history, "Initial"
stickers are not a new concept. The all-new GPK "Initial" stickers
follow the same concept as several older Topps "Initial" sets, including
the 1967 "Nutty Initials" set; the 1968 "Love Initials"
set; and the 1973 "Monster Initials" set.
A
few letters were changed from the tentative checklist to the final release (the
"B-A" mock-up pictured below belongs in neither list and is
pictured as a non-foil card on the promotional advertisement material): #4 "N-T"
became "N-V"; #12 "Q-L" became "Q-I";
#13 "A-P" became "I-P"; #14 "Z-V"
became "Z-T"; and #15 "I-W" became "L-W".
Although artist Justin Green completed the final artwork for the set, please
see the "Artwork Images" section for all of Jay Lynch's original concept
pieces.

5. The promotional Advertisement material, the Sell Sheet, 2-Sided
Flyer and Poster all have the new Tag-Line "SUPER-GROSS STICKERS",
but the Box and Packs/Wrappers still have the old "GROSS STICKERS"
tag-line. The mock-up Box display shows card 11a "Slam-Dunk DYLAN"
and 11b "Jumpshot JOSH" but is replaced by card character 36a
"CHRISTINA Barfarina" and 36b "Spewin' SHANNON"
for the final release. The new box arrangement has the GPK logo as a double-lined
banner rather than a straight banner.
6. The Original "tentative" ANS5 Checklist
was Changed replacing a few of the original names: Base cards 2b "COLE
Hands" (pictured in the Poster, and as the name "MANNY Hands"
used in promotional flyer) became 2b "Multi-Taskin' ASHTON";
5a "GEORGE Mucous" (STAR WARS director George Lucas parody
name) and 5b "Runnin' RYAN" changed to 5a "MARTY Mucous"
and 5b "Runny RYAN" (The name "RONNY Nose"
used in promotional advertisement -- which is the 12th series 472b card name);
8a "TOM Plunk" (Artist Tom Bunk parody name) and 8b "DAVE
Gross" (Artist Dave Gross parody name) became 8a "NORMAN Notwell"
and 8b "VINCENT Van Gross"; 14b "JACK Snack"
was switched to 14b "ZACK Snack"; name 16b "Gnawed
GABRIEL" was replaced with the name 16b "Gnawed CLAUDE";
17b "Eyedrops IAN" was changed to 17b "Pink-Eye GUY";
18b "ABIGAIL Ale" became 18b "Coca-COLE";
character 19b "JACOB's Loader" was switched to 19b "Decorating
DEB"; 20a "PETER Packaging" and 20b "Tongue-Tied
TONY" changed to 20a "PAUL Packaging" and 20b "Tongue-Tied
TOBY"; 25b "Picky RICKY" was replaced with 25b "Picky
DICKY"; card name 28b "Fistin' CHRISTIAN" became 28b
"TY Kwon Don't"; 37a "VICTORIA Secrete" (Parody
name of the Victoria's Secret undergarment line) and 37b "Flowin' CHLOE"
changed to 37a "FARRAH Faucet" and 37b "Leakin' LACEY";
character 38b "CHARLES Chunnel" was switched to 38b "Choo-Choo
CHARLIE"; and cards 39a "Doomed DOMINIC" and 39b "Anti-Ant
ANTHONY" changed to 39a "Doomed DWAYNE", and 39b "Toasted
TODD". Cards 1a "Metoer MARK" and 1b "Asteroid
ANTHONY" were tentatively called "Dooms Day DAVE".
7. The set contains a Piece Of Art where Topps Moved an
image For The Final Artwork. Besides the promo card, which places the
LD Monster near the bat-cave entrance and then replaces it further outside of
the cave for the final card 4a "MATT Moblie" and 4b "Batty
BRAD" as mentioned in Fun Fact #1 ... the other major movement is within
card 38a "Railroad RICHARD"
and 38b "Choo-Choo CHARLIE".
The cowboy and horse were originally located above the railroad tracks near
the bottom of the picture for the final artwork, but would have been covered
up by the name bar once published, so Topps moved the piece beside the character's
hat above the railroad tracks near the top of the picture, but placed the smoke
puff behind the horse when all of the other smoke puffs are in front
of the horse (unless there was a mighty western wind), leaving the artwork slightly
surreal.
8. Artist Luis Diaz's Initials "LD" can be found
on the eye drop bottle of cards 17a "Red-Eye ROB" and 17b "Pink-Eye
GUY". Artist Tom Bunk's first and last name "TOM" and "BUNK"
can be found grafittied on the bathroom wall of card b14 "PETE Heat".
9. The All-New Series 3 Wacky Packages set contains a card back
created by WP concept artist and painter Neil Camera that has a small parody
of a GPK called "Garbage Pail Kids - Barf Now!" as part of a humorous
website titled disgustingkids.com on card #30 "LIPLOC".
The character used is from the unpublished 16th series 657a "Crawly
Raleigh" and 657b "Bugged BOYD" or the published ANS1
set 4a "Cootie CODY" and 4b "Buggin' BRANDON".
Neil also came up with the concept piece for the rabbit hunter cards 12a "Heavin'
HUNTER" and 12b "Rabbit CHASE".

The All-New Series 5 GPK card 38a "Railroaded RICHARD" and
38b "Choo-Choo CHARLIE" (pictured above in #7) pays tribute
to the Wacky Packages by artist Luis Diaz placing the ANS3 WP parody product
#41 "BLUBBERLICIOUS" on
top of the building in the background (in front of the mountain range).
The same card also pays tribute to the Robotech character, a VW yellow bug that
may be the Transformer Bumblebee, and the train conductor's 8-bit NES (Nintendo
Entertainment System) controller -- though the buttons have been changed from
red to blue -- see "Fun Facts and Tidbits" #12 for another Diaz NES
controller painting.
10. Six pieces of Artwork were Removed
from the original line-up to become Bonus cards found in the specially packaged
retail bonus boxes or blister packs -- the bonus box for Toys R Us/KMart was
"discontinued" so cards 21a and 21b remain unpublished: 9a "GEORGE
Brush" (President George Bush parody name) and 9b "Paint Can
DAN", replaced with the KING KONG movie parody cards 9a "Furious
GEORGE" (Curious George character name parody) and 9b "King
KYLE", and became B10 "BRUCE BRUSH"; 21a "Happy-Meal
NEIL" and 21b "Bozo BOB", replaced with 21a ""ERIC
The Wreck" and 21b "Moto CARL", and remains unpublished;
22a "PATRICK Piñata" and 22b "Whacked JACK"
(Tom Bunk artwork), switched to 22a "Courtin' CODY" and 22b
"AL Entine", and became B12 "PATRICK Piñata";
23a "SYDNEY Opera" and 23b "Messy VANESSA",
replaced with 23a "CLAIRE Snare" and 23b "Lunchtime
LINDSEY", and became B11 "Opera URSULA"; 26a "BLAKE
Quake" and 26b "JACK Atoa" (Tom Bunk artwork), switched
to 26a "Mikin' MILT" and 26b "Dairy BARRY",
and became B13 "BLAKE Quake"; and lastly 30a "PETE
Heat" and 30b "DOMINICK Done", replaced with 30a "Yoga
OLGA" and 30b "MEL Smell", and became B14 "PETE
Heat".
11. The All-New
5th Series is the First Set To Contain "Magnet" Cards numbering
1 - 9 (similar to the ANS WP Magnets) that have a ration of 1 out of every 6
packs (1:6). The original arrows and numbers have been removed from the image
of the cards; they are non-die cut, though the advertisement mock-up picture
of "Varicose WAYNE" shows the card number 400b. Magnet example
: #2 of 9 "MASON Mace":
12. The series has three sets of characters
with the Same First Names: Cards 9b "King KYLE"
and 28a "Karate KYLE"; 16a "AL Poe" and 22b
"AL Entine"; and 25a "NICK Pick" and 29b "Tricky
NICK".
13. The series contains the first 'See-Through'
GPK Header; cards 31a "Turntable TIM" and 31b "Dee-Jay
JASON" - though this was not an intentional idea by the artist and
done at Topps during the final prep stages. The cards also contain three ANS4
GPK unopened packs images around the table, a "ANS5" inscription above
the record/head, and one of artist Luis Diaz's signature pieces, the "pink
water bottle". The pink water bottle can also be found in cards 2a "SAM
Bidexterous" and 2b "Multi-Taskin' ASHTON" and also
in cards 24a "Stormcloud SHAWN" and 24b "Boltin' COLTON"
(within the state of Texas on the map). The second signature piece of Diaz's,
is his "LD Monster" character which can be found in cards 4a "MATT
Mobile" and 4b "Batty BRAD" in the bottom left-hand
corner (also on the promo card). The "LD Monster" and The Lakers #8
player Kobe Bryant (Shaq holding a sign parodying Kobe's car wreck) were removed
from cards 11a "Slam-Dunk DYLAN" and 11b "Jumpshot
JOSH" for the final card. The "Pierce" name on the #1 jersey
is for Luis Diaz's friend Cory Pierce who not only came up with the basketball
concept, but also runs the GPK website GPKUG -- see "Fun Facts and TidBits"
section for more information (GPK Underground; listed in "LINKS" section).

The LD Monster with a NES controller.
14. Two of Diaz's pieces, pay Tribute to older GPK sets,
by the artist placing die-cut sticker images throughout his Artwork:
Cards 2a "SAM Bidexterous" and 2b "Multi-Taskin' Ashton"
(A GPK self-portrait of Diaz) showcases the following GPK characters under the
art table and on the clamp-on light (from left to right) - ANS5 17a "Red-Eye
ROB" and 17b "Pink-Eye GUY" work-in-progress art;
ANS3 30a "Chopper CHAD" and 30b "Hurlin' HARLEY"
as final artwork found framed in the bottom left hand corner (this piece was
originally intended to be the "LD Monster with NES controller" - pictured
above - as seen in the first draft on the "GPK Artwork" page); 14th
series 546a "Modern MARLISE" and 546b "Abstract ABBY";
15th series 619a "V.C. ARNIE" and 619b "Cassette Casey"
(covered by name bar); 14th series 565a "Easter BONNIE" and
565b "Hard-Boiled MEG" (covered by name bar); 14th series 574a
"Shattered SHELL" and 574b "Fractured FRANK"(covered
by name bar); 13th series 540a "Ill WINDSOR" and 540b "HORATIO
Hornblower" (covered by name bar); 14th series 571a "Rubber
ROBERT" and 571b "Inside OTTO"; 14th series 559a "DWAYNE
Stain" and 559b "Spilled GIL"; and 572a "Fake
JAKE" and 572b "Sham SAM", and the ANS5 final artwork
in the upper right hand corner for cards 6a "Matrix MIGUEL"
and 6b "Skinned JIM". The other piece of artwork paying tribute
to the original GPK sets are Cards 11a "Slam-Dunk DYLAN" and
11b "Jumpshot JOSH" (pictured above) contain the following
GPK characters underneath the hoop backboard frame (from left to right) - 1st
series 23a "Drippy DAN" and 23b "Leaky LOU";
15th series 617a "CLAUDE Flesh" and 617b "Slasher ASHER";
9th series 351a "CHERYL Peril" and 351b "Deflatin'
NATHAN"; ANS1 35a "Rootin' RUBEN" and 35b "Booger
BRIAN"; and 4th series 132a "Bony TONY" and 132b "Unzipped
ZACK".
15. Cards 13a "Inmate NATE" and 13b "Last-Leg
LUKE" by John Cebollero have the names "AL Catraz" and "Con
VIC" written upon the prison wall paying tribute to the 9th series jail-cell
character 343a "Con VIC" and 343b "AL Catraz".
16. Cards 21a "ERIK The Wreck" and 21b "Moto
Carl" have the website logo "GPK UG" (GPK Underground) on
the motorcycle for Cory Pierce's website. Luis Diaz plugged his friend's website
who also came up with the conceptual art for the motorcross piece. The rider's
pants also has the ANS6 logo down the pant-leg.

17. The series 20-piece Card-Back Artwork is a returned
theme from the orginal GPK series'; The eight GPK PUZZLE PUKE pieces
similar to the 11th and 13th series GG PUZZLE PUKE backs (the ANS4 also
contains twenty GPK PUZZLE PUKE pieces); The four GPK Would We Lie
To You? pieces similar to the 9th and 14th series GG Would We Lie To
You?; and the eight GPK "Comics" (parody of Bazooka Joe
comics) similar to the 6th and 8th series GPK "Comics" and
the 10th series GG "Comics".
18. The sixteenth series to contain
cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym
found on the basketball jersey of cards 11a "Slam-Dunk DYLAN"
and 11b "Jumpshot JOSH", on the snowsuit of cards 15a "Armless
AARON " and 15b "Unarmed ADRIAN", on the cola bottle
of cards 18a "COREY Cola" and 18b "Coca-COLE",
on the motorcross bike of cards 21a "ERIC The Wreck" and 21b
"Moto CARL" (the card also contains the "T"
for "Topps" along the advertisement banner), on the water bottle of
cards 30a "Yoga OLGA " and 30b "MEL Smell",
and on the turntable of cards 31a "Turntable TIM" and 31b "Dee-Jay
JASON".
19. In late 2006, after the release of the ANS5 GPK set, John Pound
worked on a GPK picture-like parody for the band the Ramones Rhino music
boxes set release -- the Image could be found on the inside cover and
on poster ads for the set in music store. The image comes from the band's highly
successful "Rocket to Russia" album with the band's name in a GPK
curved banner style logo.
20. The series Checklist is a second (after ANS4 GPK) and Contains
a Font Of Different Sizes (the name is larger then the word),
much like the Trash Can Trolls checklist without the 'bold' appearance. Unlike
the ANS4 "Insert" checklist in which the font is the same size for
the word and name, The "Insert" checklist for ANS5 has different font
sizes like the base set checklist.

2. The Card-Back Artwork, GPK "Comic",
GPK "Would We Lie To You?", and GPK "PUZZLE PUKE? were rough
sketched, tight penciled, inked, lettered, and final inked by GPK Veteran
Jay Lynch. As in the 80's, Jay Lynch hired comic strip illustrater, and
friend Gary Whitney, who helped Lynch out with the older GPK comics back-in-the-day,
to do tight pencils and final inking. Jay also requested the help of Matt Anderson
to help with final inking and lettering as the deadline approached for the "Would
We Lie To You?" artwork. Lynch also worked on a few concept pieces for
the front of the cards: Cards 7a "ANN Urism" and 7b "ESTHER
Basket"; 23a "CLAIRE Snare" and 23b "Lunchtime
LINDSEY"; and bonus card "BLAKE QUAKE" (and "JACK
Atoa").
3. GPK satire Artist
Tom Bunk completed 3 images for the All-New Series 5 set. Two of the pieces
were ideas taken from previous parody sets Topps had released in the past or
remained unpublished. Below is a sample of the sketch and color rough images
for the three bonus cards describing the changes for the final artwork.

TRASH CAN TROLLS 24a "BUSTER Open" and 24b "Crash
DANNY"
(revised for the B12 bonus card "PATRICK Piñata" for
the ANS5 set)
B12 "PATRICK Piñata"
(tree limb reversed; both hands and 1 leg dismembered, stick replaced with a
bat, tooth added)

B13 "BLAKE Quake"
(volcanos added to left of picture to center character, Gas cloud changed to
red and orange)
BATHROOM BUDDIES Unpublished 2nd Series Piece
(revised for the B14 bonus card "PETE Heat" for the ANS5 set)

B14 "PETE Heat"
(hands and face melting; hand blower raised and style changed, characters face
turned)
4. A few Unpublished Jay Lynch GPK concept Pieces
of sketch art were auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault during the
month of May in 2006 -- this is just a small sample since tons of Jay Lynch
concept pieces have been auctioned off. It appears Topps is stearing away from
quite a few parodies that could possibly bring some press to GPK ... some of
these titles are tentatively titled "Incredi BILL" ("The Incredibles"
movie parody), "Gus USHER" (The hip-hip artist Usher parody), "Crashed-On
ASTON" (The actor and "Punked" host Ashton Kucher parody), and
"GINO Frappachino" (A Starbucks coffee parody).

5. In 1987, after the release of the 8th series GPK, CBS Inc. was geared
up to premier the "Garbage Pail Kids" Cartoon on Saturday
Morning to coincide with the popularity of the GPK card craze. However, after
the cartoon was canceled due to parental groups and pressure against GPK, the
toy figures and cartoons were shelved and not released during that time. Until
now, only pirated cartoons being sold with subtitles that aired overseas were
viewable. The 13 episodes of the Paramount "GPK" cartoon were finally
released on DVD for the first time in April of 2006 to seemingly coincide with
the GPK release of the All New Series 5 during the same month. Visit the 8th
series "GPK History" section to see images of the cartoon cells and
figurines.
6. GPK Newcomer Mark Pingitore's concept Artwork Pieces
have made a huge impact on the ANS5 set. His contributions include cards 13a/b,
15a/b, 20a/b, 22a/b, 26a/b, 30a/b, 33a/b, 36a/b,
B10, and B12 - painted by different artists. Besides the B12 bonus card
painted by Tom Bunk, the strongest collaboration is between concept artist Pingitore
and painter Layron DeJarnette (15a/b, 26a/b, and 33a/b), whose combined style
is extremely close to the Pound-like look of GPK. Pictured below are "alternate"
poses or positions of the concept artwork accepted for the ANS5 set. Find "Unpublished"
concept pieces by Mark Pingitore further below (#10).

13a "Inmate NATE" and 13b "Last-Leg LUKE"
(horizontal card-look; other leg cut off added; G.P.K. tattoo on fingers remains)
15a "Armless AARON" and 15b "Unarmed ADRIAN"
(axe on stump removed from background; "GPK" added to snowsuit; holes
in gloves added)
22a "Courtin' CODY" and 22b "AL Entine"
(character whistling added; character eating valentine candy unfortunately removed)
30a "Yoga OLGA" and 30b "MEL Smell"
(character's angle changed; this pose not as strong as replacement pose)
33a "Tether BILL" and 33b "Sporty SPENCER"
(playground equipment and sand toys re-arranged; face less beat-up, eye intact)
B12 "PATRICK Piñata"
(tree limb reversed; character's position changed; more candy and guts added;
kid with bat added)
7. Uncut GPK Sheets were auctioned off of eBay through
the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; A back image for the base cards, and
a front image of the bonus cards, for the All-New Series 5 GPK set.

8. Wacky Package newcomer Artist
Dave Gross who jumped on the GPK bandwagon back in ANS3 worked on six concept
images for the All-New 5th Series set, eventually painting two of them. Below
are three pencil rough pieces completed by Dave, the first concept idea was
finalized and painted by John Pound, the second piece was painted by John Cebollero
and the third image was completed by Gross himself. For the final artwork for
cards 32a and 32b, "5 cent" pieces were added to the barf ... the
same "5 cent" piece can also be seen in the second piece painted by
David for cards 35a "Quick-Pick RICK" and 35b "Mega-Million
MIke", with the coin character barfing.
16a "AL Poe" and 16b "Gnawed CLAUDE"
(dog leaping for attack in upper left hand of card removed; area replaced with
a mailbox)
28a "Karate KYLE" and 28b "TY Kwon Don't"
(body stance changed; view of character changed; fingers chopped off instead
of whole hand)
32a "Gamblin' GABE" and 32b "LUIS Vegas"
(coins added to dispensing barf; "LUCKY" lettering changed)
9. The ALPHABET Stickers were Designed by Jay Lynch who
completed all of the roughs based on a block letter type-face. Art director
Jeff Zapata had Justin Green (who created ANS4 SKETCH cards) work on the final
artwork. As seen in the samples pictured above in "Fun Facts and TidBits",
the style of the type-face was changed because of the nature of the die-cut
equipment that Topps was currently using ... Zapata then had to take Green's
final artwork and modify them slightly on the computer to fit the new type-face,
and since some were so far removed from the original type-face, some had to
be redrawn. See Jay Lynch's original concept pieces on the "Artwork Images"
page.
10. Below are several Unpublished GPK Concept Pieces by
Mark Pingitore that did not make the ANS5 set - and most likely will
not be portrayed in any future GPK set. These pieces are more graphically 'disgusting'
and would have made wonderful GPK cards - including several parody concepts
poking fun at the movies The Ring and Star Wars. Find other concept
pieces accepted by Topps by artist Mark Pingitore further above (#6).
11. The Naming Process
was taken on my Jay Lynch who came up with 7 or 8 names per image, this was
done without actually seeing the artwork, but by descriptions of the images.
A few of the final picked names were changed with subtractions of base set pieces
for bonus cards and additions for replacements by Jeff Zapata.
