1. The first series to have Two Puzzles in One Print Run.

2. The series contains two Incorrect Die-Cut Variations that are completely different for cards 97a "Punchy PERRY ". The incorrect die-cut belongs to cards 114a and 114b.

(Correct die-cut : Die-cut behind first punch-bag head and only through veined arm)

(Incorrect die-cut : Die-cut through second punch-bag head and through spiked wristband and veined arm.)

3. The first series to Display The "© (copyright) Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. Prtd In U.S.A." on the front of the cards.

4. The first series to have Different Variation Number Colors. Cards 113a (black) "ALICE Island", 113b (black) "Liberty LIBBY" and 113a (white) "ALICE Island", 113b (white) "Liberty LIBBY".




5. The first series with the ® (Registered Trademark) under the title "Garbage Pail Kids" to be Either Red Or Blue instead of black.

6. The first series to have the GPK Header Covered by the artwork. First example: 87a "Hot Head HARVEY" and 87b "ROY Bot".


7. This series has the Light Blue Name Bar ... but not the light pink name bar.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1. The Final Artwork for cards 89a "Hurt CURT" and 89b "PAT Splat", 94a "Bruised LEE" and 94b "Karate KATE" and 116a "Eerie ERIC" and 116b "Berserk KIRK" were completed by Tom Bunk, but pencils were completed by John Pound, where Tom Bunk made improvements in poses and details. The human GPK head, arm and clothes were removed for the card character 116a "Eerie ERIC" and 116b "Berserk KIRK" in this John Pound tight pencil artwork for the final artwork by Tom Bunk.


2. The Original final Artwork Piece completed by John Pound for cards 118a "Glandular ANGELA" and 118b "Half-NELSON" was completed before the 3rd series release, but was later re-done by artist Mai (unknown last name) who worked in-staff as a Topps employee, but pencils were completed by John Pound. For the Mai finished artwork, the female hair color, clothes style and color, and muscled arm position were changed -- the final artwork can be found within the "Artwork Images" above.


3. Mark Newgarden's sketchbook page sample shows several pencil and ink rough Sketch Ideas. For the 3rd series, the middle example piece became 99a "Beaky BECKY" and 99b "Picky MICKEY" (not standing on a GPK skull).


4. Artist Tom Bunk had Different Renditions For several of his 3rd series Color Roughs. Below are some examples of these various color versions that you can compare to the actual color roughs for cards 90a "Stoned SEAN" and 90b "Thick VIC", 95a "Grim JIM" and 95b "BETH Death", and 112a "FRANK N. Stein" and 112b "Undead JED".

5. These Tom Bunk Unpublished GPK's were painted in December of 1985 and were intended for the 3rd series GPK set. Topps ended up rejecting the artwork pieces and they remain either unpublished or only as color rough sketch ideas.



(This was possibly Tom Bunk's first GPK concept piece that was rejected, but the piece was later reworked and became 25a "Prickly PETE" and 25b "Thorny BARB" of the Trash Can Trolls set)

6. These Tom Bunk Reworked GPK's were painted in December of 1985 and were intended for the 3rd series GPK set. Artwork for cards 96a "Distorted DOT" and 96b "Mirror IMOGENE" and cards 113a "ALICE Island" and 113b "Liberty LIBBY" were redone and finished by artist John Pound. Cards 103a "Wriggley RENE" and 103b "Curly CARLA" were redone and finished by Tom Bunk with the character sitting down and holding a snake.






7. This John Pound Unpublished GPK was completed late in 1985 and was intended for the 3rd series. Topps decided the piece was too gruesome and ended up rejecting the artwork for this release. The piece was originally intended for the 3rd series set with only one bullet through the hat and the character holding a "PlayBill" which was changed to "SlayBill" for the 5th series card with Abe's hat with two bullets and one bullet through his forhead, but the piece was removed late in production. 8. In 1975, Topps released the "Wanted Stickers" set ... In 1986, Topps released the 3rd series "Garbage Pail Kids" and rendered this old artwork for the card backs, 10 years later. Artist Tom Bunk had started working on the front artwork for the cards for the 3rd series with John Pound. Tom Bunk also reworked the art for the back and Mark Newgarden rendered the writing. Out of the 42 "Wanted Stickers" card set, 18 of these concepts were used in the 3rd GPK series and 15 were used in the 4th GPK series (see the 4th Series section for more information).  The 3rd GPK Rendered Titles are: 84a/b and 113a/b "Barber"; 84a/b "Principal"; 96a/b "Class Bully"; 97a/b and 119a/b "MOTHER", 98a/b and 117a/b "Slob" ; 99a/b "Dentist"; 100a/b "Candy Store Owner"; 102a/b "Doctor"; 104a/b "Garbage Man"; 105a/b "Neighbor" (changed from "Next Door Neighbor"); 106a/b "Father"; 108a/b "Teacher's Pet"; 110a/b "Big Sister"; 110a/b and 111a/b "Teacher"; 113a/b "Kid Brother"; 116a/b "Liar"; 118a/b "Kid Sister"; and 120a/b "Cheapskate".   Wanted Stickers titles Not Used in any GPK series: "Disc Jockey"; "Baby"; "Maid"; "Telephone Operator"; "Taxi Cab Driver"; "Door-to-Door Salesman"; "Butcher"; "T.V. Repairman"; and "Policeman".

9. In 1980, Topps released the "Wanted Posters" set with sharper artwork and rendered writing from the 1975 release "Wanted Stickers"... In 1986, Topps released the 3rd series "Garbage Pail Kids" and rendered this old artwork for the card backs, 5 years later.  Artist Tom Bunk had started working on the front artwork for the cards with John Pound. Tom Bunk also reworked the art for the back and Mark Newgarden rendered the writing. Out of the 24 "Wanted Posters" set, 18 of these concepts were used in the 3rd GPK series and 3 were used in the 4th GPK series (see the 4th Series section for more information).  The 3rd GPK rendered titles are: 84a/b and 113a/b "Barber"; 84a/b "Principal"; 96a/b "Class Bully"; 97a/b and 119a/b "MOTHER" (partial poster #6 pictured below), 98a/b and 117a/b "Slob"; 99a/b "Dentist"; 100a/b "Candy Store Owner"; 102a/b "Doctor"; 104a/b "Garbage Man"; 105a/b "Neighbor" (rendered from "Next Door Neighbor"); 106a/b "Father"; 108a/b "Teacher's Pet"; 110a/b "Big Sister"; 110a/b and 111a/b "Teacher"; 113a/b "Kid Brother"; 116a/b "Liar"; 118a/b "Kid Sister"; and 120a/b "Cheapskate".   Wanted Posters titles Not Used in any GPK series: "School Flirt"; "Butcher"; and "T.V.
