U.S. EDITION

RELEASE DATE : JANUARY 1986

Both, the first and third (Canada) print runs of the 3rd Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS3 GPK; Original Series) are different from the middle, second print run.  The first and third print runs can either be found without the copyright date printed on the front of every card OR found with the copyright date printed on the front of all the puzzle pieces and preview cards.  However, the second print run has a copyright date printed on the front of all the puzzle pieces and puzzle preview cards.  The second print run (copyright) has a wrapper without the '25¢' logo. The first print run and the third print run (Canada) both have a wrapper with the '25¢' logo.  When sealed, you cannot tell whether the '25¢' pack is a first, second or third print run card.  The 3rd series cards within the Canada wrapper packs can be found with rougher cut edges, much like the 1st OPC (O-Pee-Chee) and 9th Canada cards.

1.
The first series to have the GPK Header Covered by the artwork. First example: 87a Hot Head HARVEY and 87b ROY Bot.

2
. The series contains two Incorrect Die-Cut Variations that are completely different for both of cards 97a Punchy PERRY and 114a Starin' DARREN, where 114a can be found with two different variations due to the 'copyright' print run, for a total of three variations. The 97a and 114a die-cuts were switched in error for one of the two print runs during production, either the first or second print run, which was incorrect from the 1st print run or corrected after the 2nd print run. Card 97a has one die-cut error variation considering no copyright is found on the front of the puzzle cards for any print run, however, card 114a can be found with the die-cut error for both the copyright and no copyright editions. These are some of the most impressive variations from printing errors that are not ink-related. Thanks to Jeff P. for initially digging this phenomenon up.

Incorrect die-cut for card 97a: Die-cut through the first punching-bag head and through the spiked wristband.
Incorrect die-cut for card 114a: die-cuts well outside the card image (copyright or no copyright on front of card).

3.
The first series to Display The " (copyright) Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. Prtd In U.S.A." on the front of the cards.

4. The first series to have Different Variation Number Colors. Cards 113a (black card number) ALICE Island and 113b (black card number) Liberty LIBBY and cards 113a (white card number) ALICE Island and 113b (white) Liberty LIBBY.

5. The first series with the (Registered Trademark) under the title Garbage Pail Kids to be Either Red Or Blue instead of black.

6. The first Garbage Pail Kids series to have Two Puzzles in one set; characters 102a Mugged MARCUS and 102b Kayo'd CODY and 110a Snooty SAM and 110b U.S. Arnie.

7. The character for cards 115a Warmin' NORMAN and 115b Well Done SHELDON has a "G" On his Belt - which potentially stands for "Garbage Pail Kids".

8. This series has the Light Blue Name Bar ... but not the light pink name bar.

1
. The Final Artwork For cards 104a Silent SANDY and 104b Barren AARON was touched-up by the Art Department at Topps prior to publishing; which was a separate area from the NPD Department (that worked on the Garbage Pail Kids releases). In-staffer Mae Jeon from the Art Department who worked on backgrounds for baseball cards at the time was instructed to 'lighten' the face area so the sphinx wouldn't print so darkly on card. This did cause some animosity between the two departments back in the day. Below is the original artowrk by John Pound; the touched-up piece can be located within the Artwork Gallery section above.

2. The Original final Artwork Piece completed by John Pound for cards 118a Glandular ANGELA and 118b Half-NELSON was completed before the 3rd series release, but was later re-done by artist Mae Jeon who worked in-staff as a Topps employee, but pencils were completed by John Pound. For the Mae finished artwork, the female hair color, clothes style and color, and muscled arm position were changed -- the final artwork can be found within the "Artwork Images" above.

3.
Per John Pound's Notes and references, the images used for the Giant Series card #7 Why Fight It? was a previously unpublished artwork piece intended for the 3rd series set (OS3). The subject matter may have pushed it out of the regular sets into a special set.

4. Artist Tom Bunk had Different Renditions For several of his 3rd series Color Roughs. Below are some examples of these various color versions that you can compare to the actual color roughs for cards 90a Stoned SEAN and 90b Thick VIC, 95a Grim JIM and 95b BETH Death and 112a FRANK N. Stein and 112b Undead JED.

5. The Final Artwork for cards 89a Hurt CURT and 89b PAT Splat, 94a Bruised LEE and 94b Karate KATE and 116a Eerie ERIC and 116b Berserk KIRK were completed by Tom Bunk, but pencils were completed by John Pound where Tom Bunk made changes in poses and details as directed by the NPD department. The human GPK head, arm and clothes seen in this John Pound tight pencil were removed for the card character 116a Eerie ERIC and 116b Berserk KIRK for the final artwork by Tom Bunk.

6. These Tom Bunk Unpublished Garbage Pail Kidss were painted in December of 1985 and were intended for the 3rd series GPK set. Topps ended up rejecting the artwork concepts and they remain unpublished.

7. Per John Pound's website; the characters for cards 113a ALICE Island and 113b Liberty LIBBY had a major Color Variation for the skyline. A color rough was also created picturing the character within an evening skyline with the sun setting, instead of the sky blue daytime version that was chosen.

8. This was possibly Tom Bunk's first GPK concept piece, as mentioned by the artist, that was rejected by Topps. The piece was later reworked and became cards 25a Prickly PETE and 25b Thorny BARB of the Trash Can Trolls set released in 1992 by Pat Pigott
. The original GPK artwork was finally published in late 2011 for the GPK Flashback 3 set as LOST GPK cards 67a Prickly PETE and 67b Thorny BARB and the summer of 2013 within the Chrome OS1 set as cards L3a and L3b.

9. Mark Newgarden's sketchbook page sample shows several pencil and ink rough Sketch Ideas. For the 3rd series Garbage Pail Kids set the middle example piece became 99a Beaky BECKY and 99b Picky MICKEY; not standing on a GPK skull.

10. These Tom Bunk Reworked GPK's were created in December of 1985 and were intended for the 3rd series GPK set. Artwork for cards 96a Distorted DOT and 96b Mirror IMOGENE and cards 113a ALICE Island and 113b Liberty LIBBY were redone and finished by artist John Pound. Cards 103a Wriggley RENE and 103b Curly CARLA were redone and finished by Tom Bunk with the character sitting down and holding a snake.

11. This John Pound Unpublished GPK was completed late in 1985 and was intended for the 3rd series. Topps decided the piece was too gruesome and ended up rejecting the artwork for this release. The piece was originally intended for the 3rd series set with only one bullet through the hat and the character holding a 'PlayBill' which was changed to 'SlayBill' for the 5th series card with Abe's hat with two bullets and one bullet through his forehead, but the piece was removed late in production; this second reworked piece was later published in 2010 for the GPK Flashback series; see the 5th series 'GPK History' section for images and more information.

12.
In 1975, Topps released the Wanted Stickers set ... In 1986, Topps released the 3rd series Garbage Pail Kids and rendered this old artwork for the card backs, 10 years later. Out of the 42 Wanted Stickers card set, 18 of these concepts were used in the 3rd GPK series and 15 were used in the 4th GPK series (see the 4th Series section for more information).  The 3rd GPK Rendered Titles are: 84a/b and 113a/b Barber; 84a/b Principal; 96a/b Class Bully; 97a/b and 119a/b MOTHER, 98a/b and 117a/b Slob; 99a/b Dentist; 100a/b Candy Store Owner; 102a/b Doctor; 104a/b Garbage Man; 105a/b Neighbor (changed from Next Door Neighbor); 106a/b Father; 108a/b Teacher's Pet; 110a/b Big Sister; 110a/b and 111a/b Teacher; 113a/b Kid Brother; 116a/b Liar; 118a/b Kid Sister; and 120a/b Cheapskate.   Wanted Stickers titles Not Used in any GPK series: Disc Jockey; Baby; Maid; Telephone Operator; Taxi Cab Driver; Door-to-Door Salesman; Butcher; T.V. 13.
In 1980, Topps released the Wanted Posters set with sharper artwork and rendered writing from the 1975 release Wanted Stickers... In 1986, Topps released the 3rd series Garbage Pail Kids and rendered this old artwork for the card backs, 5 years later.  Artist Tom Bunk had started working on the front artwork for the cards with John Pound. Tom Bunk also reworked the art for the back and Mark Newgarden rendered the writing. Out of the 24 Wanted Posters set, 18 of these concepts were used in the 3rd GPK series and 3 were used in the 4th GPK series (see the 4th Series section for more information).  The 3rd GPK rendered titles are: 84a/b and 113a/b Barber; 84a/b Principal; 96a/b Class Bully; 97a/b and 119a/b MOTHER (poster #6 pictured below), 98a/b and 117a/b Slob; 99a/b Dentist; 100a/b Candy Store Owner; 102a/b Doctor; 104a/b Garbage Man; 105a/b Neighbor (rendered from Next Door Neighbor); 106a/b Father; 108a/b Teacher's Pet; 110a/b Big Sister; 110a/b and 111a/b Teacher; 113a/b Kid Brother; 116a/b Liar; 118a/b Kid Sister; and 120a/b Cheapskate.   Wanted Posters titles Not Used in any GPK series: School Flirt; Butcher; and T.V. Repairman.

(WANTED! changed to black and 'For Child Abuse'
changed to red for the poster)
