14TH SERIES CARD BACK SECTION
Although, one of several final artwork pieces that
GPK collector Nate Lucius purchased through the Topps Vault, this particular
piece
was not smooth like the others and had something pasted over it -- including
an overlay sheet with changed text cut out from construction
paper and pasted on over the original... literally, a last minute change before
publication.

Tom Bunk's rouch sketch for the 14th series card back #565 with the original
unpublished concept image for removing warts with gasoline.
Tom Bunk's final artwork for the 14th series card back #565 after published
final
artwork image removed leaving a little glue residue.. a GREAT find.

Tom Bunk's final artwork measuring 10.5 x 7 inches for 14th series card back
#565 with the
original unpublished image covered over
the removing pimples with a guillotine piece
-- "The G.P.K. Acne Removal System" missing from image.

GPK
Garbage
Pail Kids were created by the Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. in 1985 by Mark Newgarden
and Art Spiegelman, both were art directors and editors for the series, who
came up with the concept art (with several hundred concept sketches done by
John Pound) and named the characters for the 16 series of GPK. Later, the naming
panel also included Len Brown and Stan Hart, with suggestions by the artists,
writers and even last minute name changes by Arthur Shorin, the then Pres. of
Topps. Artists such as John Pound (acrylic and airbrush) and Tom Bunk (gouache
and airbrush), both who completed around 90% of the finished art, were commissioned
to create the final art for the card fronts, later joined with James Warhola
(oils), David Berg, Bennett, Chet Darnstaedter (Xno), and Bill Wray (one artwork
front). Card backs were drawn by Tom Bunk, Jay Lynch, Howard Cruse, and Richard
McGuire who animated the "Flick It" section of the later series. The
writing on several different GPK series card backs were from older Topps sets
rendered and written by Mark Newgarden, later writers also included Art Spiegelman,
Jay Lynch, and John Mariano. Other individuals who assisted by penciling, inking,
coloring, or doing lettering were Carole Sobocinski, Grass Green, and Javi Soler.
Still others contributed ideas and sketches and such as Len Brown, Frank Santopadre
(writer), Stephen Kroninger, Bob Sikoryak, and Paul Karasik. These terribly
gifted collaborators made Garbage Pail Kids the most hyped and talked about
craze in non-sport card history.
In the late summer of
2003, Topps took advantage of the increasingly nostalgic craze for 1980's games
and toys and released several "all-new" GPK sets over the next several
years through 2010, plus a Flashback set with orginal GPK artwork. Art directed
originally by John Williams (who became the supervising editor) and later by
Jeff Zapata (series editor, concept artist and writer), the new GPK craze is
comprised of veteran GPK artists' John Pound, Tom Bunk, James Warhola, Frank
Santopadre, and Jay Lynch (who supplied concept and card back artwork - along
with Scott Shaw). The series' also includes newcomer GPK artists David Gross,
Luis Diaz, Strephon Taylor, John Czop, Pat Glover, Sean Glover, Chris Hebel,
Keith Webb, Aron Laikin, Sean Greathead, John Cebollero, Claude St. Aubin, Mark
Sparacio, George Wright, Justin Green, Don Perlin, Layron DeJarnette, Brent
Engstrom, John Zeleznik, Fred Harper, and concept artists Mark Pingitore, Fred
Wheaton (one artwork front, sketch cards), Mark MacAulay, several artists listed
above, and Colin Walton (editor, motion card animator, sketch cards). So far,
seven "all-new" series sets have been released to date.
Besides the 24 U.S. Garbage
Pail Kids series below (one unpublished), further down you will find the GPK~World
category which contains various international sets released in other countries
- that reflects mainly my own collection or examples of the sets and a GPK~Land
category containing other U.S. sets such as the Giant Stickers, Posters set,
interviews, articles, wrapper and box charts, and other unique sections. In
each series section you will find: a Series Introduction explaining the
release, a Product Overview outlining the packaging and promotional materials,
an Artwork Images section displaying the original final artwork, a Fun
Facts & Tid-Bits area which states interesting
information about the set, a GPK 101 : Annotated Names section which
in depthly explains the name given to the character, a GPK History Section
containing information before the set was released, and a Comprehensive Checklist
that lists all the cards associated with the set including variations, errors,
etc.
